4. Cold-charge material for re-melting - "Synticom" in compliance with TU0810-053-50254094-2002

OAO "Svobodny Sokol" commercially produces new class of synthetic compositional cold-charge material under commercial name "Synticom".

Composition, properties and sphere of application

"Synticom" is a cold-charge material for re-melting, consisting of blast furnace products and iron oxides. Its future properties and features are determined at the manufacturing stage.

"Synticom" is produced from blast furnace iron grades P1, P2 or cast iron grade P2 with oxidant (iron ore pellets from Lebedinsky or Mikhailovsky ore mining and processing companies). It is supplied in pyramid-form ingots weighing 7-10 kg, which are similar to hard pig iron.

OAO "Svobodny Sokol" produces following grades of "Synticom" with the parameters listed below:

Grade of
synticom
Share by weight, % Content of basic elements,% Content of Cu+Cr+Ni+Sn+Mo, S, % Density of synticom, kg/dm3, not more than bulk weight, t/m3
oxidant iron Fetotal С O2 С:О2

CK15 15 85 90 3,6 4,2 0,85 6,7 2,7-3,1
CK20 20 80 88 3,4 5,6 0,6 6,5 2,6-3,0

Fundamental difference of synticom from other kinds of charge (pig iron, iron scrap and direct-reduced iron) is the presence of carbon and oxygen inside the material. It facilitates following simultaneous and concurrent processes during smelting and heating of synticom:

  • Oxidation of carbon and other admixtures;
  • Reduction of iron from oxides and its smelting;
  • Slag formation;
  • Refining and mixing of melt by products of reactions;
  • After-burning of CO to CO2 and utilization of heat from this reaction for batch preheating.

Synticom is a product similar to pure hard-weight scrap. It is characterized by lower smelting temperature, constant composition and weight of pigs. Synticom is intended for use as charge material for production of high-quality steel grades.

Synticom is an alternative to steel scrap, pig iron, iron raw materials (DRI, HBI) and can be used both separately and in combination with other kinds of charge.

Oxidation-reduction and energy potential of synticom have a wide adjustment range, what makes it possible to be used as charge in electric-arc furnaces (EAF), basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) and in other facilities.

The share of synticom in charge for EAFs may be 60-70% or more, and 10-30% for BOFs.

Advantages:

  • high purity in respect to non-ferrous metals makes it possible to be used as raw material for special-purpose steel grades;
  • acceleration of smelting process when compared to scrap due to lowering of melting temperature by 200-300оC;
  • early beginning of high-speed carbon oxidation at a rate of up to 0,3-0,4 % C/min;
  • Improvement of heat balance for the furnace due to constant release of carbon monoxide;
  • fast formation of high-base slag;
  • reduction of per unit energy consumption;
  • steady and uniform boiling of molten pool;
  • increasing the degree of steel dephosphorizaiton by 3-5%;
  • lowering the dependence from market conditions on iron charge.
